Race Report - Silverstone 27th April 2019
Bruce Crawley leads the rankings after Silverstone opening rounds
The UK Sports Prototype Cup began at the Silverstone GP Circuit, this two race showcase of the brand new Revolution race car and the debut of the BARC Radical SR3 Trophy producing intrigue and drama.
The diverse nature of the grid was highlighted as each race was won by a different driver. In race 1, James Abbott won the Revolution UK Trophy while Rob Wheldon won the BARC Radical SR3 Trophy in dominant fashion. The pair had a tight battle in the early stages for overall honours before they focused on securing their respective class victories.
Bruce Crawley won the second SR3 race in dramatic fashion after Wheldon pitted in the closing stages. Johan Boris-Scheier drove a superb race winning the Revolution Trophy despite very limited running in the car before the race due to International race licencing issues. The Frenchman built his pace throughout the race, despite an unscheduled pitstop to investigate a wheel balance issue.
Bruce Crawley explained his dramatic victory: “I was surprised to win the race, the challenging conditions made it tricky but we changed the setup on the car and we were able to keep a strong pace.
“The Revolution looks like a great car and I hope to see more on the grid in the future.”
Paul Pearce was a double podium finisher, making it a good weekend for the RAW Motorsport team. Team owner Wheldon, who has previously won races in the Radical Challenge showed extremely quick pace and consistency throughout both races winning the B.R.M Speed Award for Radical drivers. Abbott narrowly won the same award in a hotly contested Revolution fastest lap battle with Boris-Scheier. At the end of the year, the three fastest drivers based on class fastest laps win a limited edition B.R.M. luxury watch.
James Bailey, Championship Promoter stated: “The first round of the Sports Prototype Cup showcased a depth of talent. We had positive feedback on the format and are applying the learnings to attract more Revolution and SR3 owners later this season.”
The next round of the UK Sports Prototype Cup is at the Donington Park Circuit on the 1-2 June with three races.
