Abbott does the double at Silverstone

Silverstone was the backdrop for the second Sports Prototype Cup event of 2022, with two 20-minute sprint races on the full Grand Prix Circuit.

The Revolution, in the hands of James Abbott, dominated the day's running with a pole and two victories, demonstrating the performance of the Revolution A-One 500SC on a full grid of Zeo open class cars. Abbott headed Matt Manderson’s Radical SR8 and Clark’s RXC on its way to a double victory. Abbott’s fastest lap also meant he was the winner of the B.R.M Speed Award.

Qualifying took place under cool conditions and would set the 19-car grid for both races. Drivers’ fastest time would count for race one, and their second time for race two. Abbott made a large impression by setting the best time in the Revolution class, bagging him second place for race one and pole for race two.

Abbott took race one victory in his Revolution Race Car, overtaking polesitter Mike Jenvey in his Zeo-class Jenvey Gunn TS6 early on. Unfortunately, Jenvey was forced to retire after contact in the battle. Later, Abbott built a commanding lead out front, finishing 32.6s ahead of Richard Morris, runner-up in the Revolution class.

Chris Hoy finished third in class, having battled with Morris for second place in the race's early stages, but was delayed by an unscheduled fuel stop on the last lap.

In the Radical class, Michael Clark was the top finisher, leading the SR3s of Ross Drew and Charles Graham to complete the podium spots.

In race two, Abbott led from pole and pulled out a 44s gap to Morris by race end, who led home Hoy to finish in the same positions as race one. Clark was the highest finisher in the Radical class.

Morris and Hoy were locked in a tight battle for second place in the Revolution class. Hoy passed Morris on the opening lap of the second race but was unable to keep hold of the position as Morris took back the place on lap 5 to finish race two in the same positions as race one. Drew and Graham enjoyed close battles with many of the open class prototypes from the Zeo series to complete the Radical Trophy podium.
