High-quality grid ready for season-opener on Saturday

  • Famous names and international racers to capture fans’ attention

  • Entries still open for pair of 30-minute sprints

After trial races in 2019, Sports Prototype Cup kicks off its first full season this weekend with a pair of races at Brands Hatch and an exciting mixed grid of prototype race cars.

Racing on the same programme as the Dunlop Endurance Championship on Saturday, 1 August, Sports Prototype Cup competitors will get two 30-minute races and a 20-minute qualifying session on the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit.

The entry list currently includes 17 cars but entries are still open and the field could very well grow before race day. Sports Prototype Cup promoter PitBox91 is proud of the high-quality field that includes several drivers who have raced and won on the world stage.

The majority of entrants are racing in the Revolution UK Trophy in the exciting Revolution A-One prototype. Eleven Revolutions are entered by eight different teams, including the likes of BTCC squad Excelr8 Motorsport, versatile historic racers Greensall Motorsport and international LMP team Mike Smith Motorsport.

Revolution drivers include LMP3 regulars Alex Kapadia and Morten Dons (both Mike Smith Motorsport with Breakell Racing), Marcello Marateotto (RAW Motorsports) and John Corbett (Greensall Motorsport), who has raced at LMP2 level too. James Winslow (RAW Motorsports) has raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times and is a familiar face in LMP2 and LMP3 championships around the world.

James Abbott (Smart Fitt Racing) was one of the stand-out drivers in Sports Prototype Cup last year, winning races in the Revolution UK Trophy. Other Revolutions will be raced by Dominik Dierkes (DD Compound), whose company manufactures the car’s carbon tub, and by historic racer Nigel Greensall (Valour Racing).

LMP3 and Radical regular and former McLaren Autosport BRDC Award nominee Scott Mansell will race for Excelr8 Motorsport, while GT3 racer Bradley Ellis pilots RAW Motorsports’ third Revolution. One of the field’s most recognisable names is Adrian Reynard (Breakell Racing), best known for his involvement in Formula 1 teams and for manufacturing single-seater race cars through Reynard Motorsport.

The Sports Prototype Open class is available for any prototype race car up to and including Radical SR3 pace. Five drivers have elected to race Radicals in the Open class this weekend, along with BRSCC OSS race winner Patrick Sherrington’s MCR Sports: the field’s only turbo car.

Barry Liversidge (RAW Motorsports), Peter Tyler (360 Racing) and Andy Chittenden are all experienced Radical racers, and Tyler knows what it takes to win a Sports Prototype Cup race, having stood on the top step of the podium at Snetterton last year. Further adding to the variety and competition, RJ Motorsport’s Robert Rees and Alastair Smart will each race modified Radicals.

Entries for the opening weekend in a packed and exciting Sports Prototype Cup season are still open, with plenty of space in the Open and BARC Radical SR3 Trophy classes.

Sports Prototype Cup is one of Europe’s most exciting new race series, providing an affordable and accessible environment for racers with sports prototypes to compete on a mixed grid. After Brands Hatch, the series will visit Spa-Francorchamps (15 August), Snetterton (19 September) and Le Castellet (6-7 November).
