A new home for OSS drivers

  • Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit double-header headlines nine-race calendar

The Sports Prototype Cup, which features a ‘race within the race’ concept for both the Revolution UK Trophy and BARC Radical SR3 Trophy, has added an Open class at most of its 2020 events. This class, named Sports Prototype Open, will provide a home for many drivers from the OSS championship, which announced its closure last week.

James Bailey, Sports Prototype Cup Promoter said: “Our Open class has very simple regulations. It caters for any sportscar that doesn’t exceed Radical SR3 pace. Rather than having complex balance of performance measures, it is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure this time is not exceeded. This regulation also protects our loyal group of SR3 owners.”

The Sports Prototype Open will feature nine races across four meetings.  Donington, Brands Hatch and Snetterton will feature this capped pace regulation. For the flagship event of the Open, at Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, this regulation will be relaxed to allow a wider range of CN-type cars to compete. “The size of Silverstone Grand Prix circuit means there is less of an issue with speed differentials than at smaller venues. We expect a very diverse grid there.” added Bailey.

The Open also provides an opportunity for owners of Clubmans, Sports 2000, Bike Engined cars and even Caterham-type cars to try a different race format alongside their core championship. Other similar vehicles will be considered.

The Sports Prototype Cup enters its first full season in 2020 with the promise of strong grid numbers. Revolution Race Cars have committed twelve entries at each round, including their one-off FIA World Endurance Championship support class with Britcar at Spa-Francorchamps. The BARC Radical SR3 Trophy is attracting drivers looking for generous track time and clean racing and the Open category brings greater diversity to the growing grids.

The first round of both the Sports Prototype Cup and Sports Prototype Open is at Donington on Easter Saturday (April 11th).
